~ Hitchin' & Runnin' Feedsack Underwear ~ Love Is...

Some time ago, I had mentioned my sister & I wearing our feedsack underwear. Elastic was threaded thru the waistline, the legs were hemmed. Occasionally, as she & I were running we'd have to 'hitch' up our drawers. I can still vividly remember us 'hitchin', & runnin', & 'hitchin', & 'runnin' ...

I ran across this wonderful picture from Diary of a 50s Farm Wife blog & asked Ms. Hambley (Thank you) if I might use it to show you. Some of you had not heard of feedsack underwear ... here ya' go! Some still had the advertising right across the rear end.

And, then I ran across this little poem on the internet that is as cute as can be ...

Feed Sack Underwear

When I was a maiden fair
Mama made our underwear.
With seven kids and Dad's poor pay
How could she buy lingerie?
Monograms and fancy stitches
Were not on our feed sack britches -
Panty waists that stood the test
With Purina across the chest -
Little pants, the best of all
With seams that I can still recall.
Harvesters were gleaning wheat
Right across the little seat!
Tougher than a grizzly bear
Was our feed sack underwear.
Plain or fancy, two feet wide,
Stronger than a hippo's hide.
Through the years, each Jack and Jill
Wore this garb against their will.
Waste not, want not, we soon learned...
A penny saved is a penny earned!
Dresses, curtains, dish towels too
And pillow ships to name a few,
But the best beyond compare
Was always our feed sack underwear!

**LV @ livinatmemescorner.blogspot.com/ mentioned that 'when the elastic broke they were just pinned up ...' & she is right. TY LV.

~ I Love To Play With PINK ~ Saturday ...

So what do you think?

Please join Miss Beverly, our sweet hostess,
& the other lovely pinkies for Pink Saturday.

I added little beads of 'pink bling gems' to many of the cupcakes, tucking them on bows & flowers in the cupcake designs.

Now we all know & love our wonderful Sissie. She was kind enough to share with
me a tutorial on the 'how to' make florettes.
I've been kind of tickled they turned out nicely.

Inside each florette I placed more pink bling gems.

It took me a couple of weeks to decide what I would use for the bottom of this lamp shade ...

I love it.

Do you? ... & here is the other one ~

Now my other question is this ... do you like the pink & white florette in the middle?

I added pink bling gems in the center of each daisy.

The bling just made the daisies sparkle ...

Over the pink beading trim I used white
gimp. I love this gimp & use it often.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated before I decide to put them in my shop.

Happy Pink Saturday, my friends!

~ Childhood Memories on Hot Summer Nights ~

Childhood Memories on Hot Summer Nights

Guest Post Alert! Featuring Marydon Ford from http://blushingroseboutique.blogspot.com/!

Oh, the days of feather pillow fights upon our platform beds, how we’d giggle for hours with feathers flying. Mother used to take the bed frames outside in the heat of the summer, throw the old feather mattress upon it & we’d ‘camp out’. All the neighbor kids would come over, sometimes 6 to the bed. We’d tell horror stories, look at the stars, jabbering until sleep captured each of us in the wee hours of the morn. There was always one of the kids that would tell creepy stories and then scare us by screaming in the middle of the night.

The perfect star-gazing platform bed:

Sitcom Furniture Hide Bed - $799.00
Dark Oak finish
Constructed oak veneers and mangowood solids
Available in Queen, California King and Eastern King sizes

I treasure those moments & precious memories, of a life that the children of today will never know … simplicity.

Do you have any wonderful childhood memories you’d like to share?

Thank you Marydon for your awesome post! If you are interested in being featured as a guest writer, please contact csnpromoteam@csnstores.com for more information!

~ Moments of Love, Welcome Summer ~

Such a perfect share for the first day of summer.

We received yesterday from an unknown person at a bank in our hometown, Chehalis WA, an envelope of old pictures. Lots of pictures. We have no clue why they were sent to us, but thrilled to receive them.

It took a good while to realize they were Harold's angel-uncle Robert & his now angel-son David. David was killed while serving in our armed forces just about 2 weeks before returning home, in a car accident many years ago as a very young man.

We had never seen these pictures before.

~ Power of Prayer, Thank You God ~

Today they went into the heart arteries, the main ones have a little blockage but some tiny arteries were blocked here & there. They do not fool with them as they are that tiny & nothing to worry about.
So back to the heart Dr. next week. The other (2) surgeries for his arteries are doing well. They can't do his neck arteries yet.

Thank you all for your prayers & warm thoughts as they are deeply appreciated by both of us.

Hugs & love,
Marydon & Harold

PS I'll be back in a few days.

Love Is... Prayers Please ~ (& A Blogger Issue)

Tomorrow my husband is having his heart artery surgery. If you would be so kind to keep us in prayer. This is his 3rd artery surgery in less than 3 months.

NOW for this blogger stuff! Ugh! when will it end?.

I tried innumerable times over the weekend to write many of you, my friends. Blogger would not let me.; it even erased some of my comments when I checked back on them. A message comes up SERVICE UNAVAILABLE Code #503. (No clue what that means.) I pinky apologize.

I am going to be on a lot less for a little bit, so bear with me. I will miss you more than you can know, but will visit as much as possible. Issues have to be taken care of.

Pinky hugs of love to each of you. Please join our other lovely pink ladies.

The Wedding Gown That Made History ~ Pink Saturday

Today I bring to you a special story & a piece of history.

Thank you Stephanie for this opportunity to share with everyone.

Thank you to our sweet hostess Miss Beverly @ Pink Saturday.

This is a story from the heart, a pink heart of love.

Lilly Friedman doesn’t remember the last name of the woman who designed and sewed the wedding gown she wore when she walked down the aisle over 60 years ago. But the grandmother of seven does recall that when she first told her fiancé Ludwig that she had always dreamed of being married in a white gown he realized he had his work cut out for him.

For the tall, lanky 21-year-old who had survived hunger, disease and torture this was a different kind of challenge. How was he ever going to find such a dress in the Bergen Belsen Displaced Person’s camp where they felt grateful for the clothes on their backs.

Lilly Friedman and her wedding gown on display in the Bergen Belsen Museum.

Fate would intervene in the guise of a former German pilot who walked into the food distribution center where Ludwig worked, eager to make a trade for his worthless parachute. In exchange for two pounds of coffee beans and a couple of packs of cigarettes Lilly would have her wedding gown.

For two weeks Miriam the seamstress worked under the curious eyes of her fellow DPs, carefully fashioning the six parachute panels into a simple, long sleeved gown with a rolled collar and a fitted waist that tied in the back with a bow. When the dress was completed she sewed the leftover material into a matching shirt for the groom.

A white wedding gown may have seemed like a frivolous request in the surreal environment of the camps, but for Lilly the dress symbolized the innocent, normal life she and her family had once led before the world descended into madness. Lilly and her siblings were raised in a Torah observant home in the small town of Zarica, Czechoslovakia where her father was a melamed, respected and well liked by the young yeshiva students he taught in nearby Irsheva.
He and his two sons were marked for extermination immediately upon arriving at Auschwitz. For Lilly and her sisters it was only their first stop on their long journey of persecution, which included Plashof, Neustadt, Gross Rosen and finally Bergen Belsen.

Four hundred people marched 15 miles in the snow to the town of Celle on January 27, 1946 to attend Lilly and Ludwig’s wedding. The town synagogue, damaged and desecrated, had been lovingly renovated by the DPs with the meager materials available to them. When a Sefer Torah arrived from England they converted an old kitchen cabinet into a makeshift Aron Kodesh.

“My sisters and I lost everything – our parents, our two brothers, our homes. The most important thing was to build a new home.” Six months later, Lilly’s sister Ilona wore the dress when she married Max Traeger. After that came Cousin Rosie. How many brides wore Lilly’s dress? “I stopped counting after 17.” With the camps experiencing the highest marriage rate in the world, Lilly’s gown was in great demand.

In 1948 when President Harry Truman finally permitted the 100,000 Jews who had been languishing in DP camps since the end of the war to emigrate, the gown accompanied Lilly across the ocean to America. Unable to part with her dress, it lay at the bottom of her bedroom closet for the next 50 years, “not even good enough for a garage sale. I was happy when it found such a good home.”

Home was the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. When Lily’s niece, a volunteer, told museum officials about her aunt’s dress, they immediately recognized its historical significance and displayed the gown in a specially designed showcase, guaranteed to preserve it for 500 years.

But Lilly Friedman’s dress had one more journey to make. Bergen Belsen, the museum, opened its doors on October 28, 2007. The German government invited Lilly and her sisters to be their guests for the grand opening. They initially declined, but finally traveled to Hanover the following year with their children, their grandchildren and extended families to view the extraordinary exhibit created for the wedding dress made from a parachute.

Lilly’s family, who were all familiar with the stories about the wedding in Celle, were eager to visit the synagogue. They found the building had been completely renovated and modernized. But when they pulled aside the handsome curtain they were astounded to find that the Aron Kodesh, made from a kitchen cabinet, had remained untouched as a testament to the profound faith of the survivors. As Lilly stood on the bimah once again she beckoned to her granddaughter, Jackie, to stand beside her where she was once a kallah. “It was an emotional trip. We cried a lot.”

Two weeks later, the woman who had once stood trembling before the selective eyes of the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele returned home and witnessed the marriage of her granddaughter.

The three Lax sisters – Lilly, Ilona and Eva, who together survived Auschwitz, a forced labor camp, a death march and Bergen Belsen – have remained close and today live within walking distance of each other in Brooklyn. As mere teenagers, they managed to outwit and outlive a monstrous killing machine, then went on to marry, have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and were ultimately honored by the country that had earmarked them for extinction.

As young brides, they had stood underneath the chuppah and recited the blessings that their ancestors had been saying for thousands of years. In doing so, they chose to honor the legacy of those who had perished by choosing life.

~ The Quarter, A Christian Witness ~

Several years ago, a preacher from
out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Houston , Texas . Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area
When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought, “You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.” Then he thought, “Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet.”

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at
the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change.”

The driver, with a
smile, replied, “Aren't you the new preacher in town?”

“Yes,” he replied.

“Well, I have been thinking a lot lately
about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you at church on Sunday.”

When the preacher stepped off of
the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.”

Our lives are the only Bible some people
will ever read. This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as Christians, and will put us to the test! Always be on guard -- and remember -- You carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself “Christian.”

Watch your thoughts; they become
words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch
your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they
become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your
destiny.
(Thank you Sandi, for sharing)

~ I'm In The Pink ... Saturday ~

I've been playing with PINK & you know I love
GREEN.

This is a waste bin for a nursery. Each flowerette
has a tiny PINK BLING in the center.

What fun I had with this nursery lampshade. PINK
fabric w/white polka dots, PINK pleated skirt
adorned with white gimp overlaid with PINK BLING
accented with a GREEN velvet trim, GREEN
grosgrain ribbon, a white flowerette with a PINK BLING center.

There is a little PINK moon to pull to turn on the
lamp.

This is the first time I tried to make a flower &
was kind of pleased. See the PINK BLING center.

The gimp is overlaid with the PINK BLING
just above the pleats.

Do you like this creation? Input ...

I ribbed the back with the GREEN trim & more
PINK BLING to cover the seam.

The memory board is the same PINK & white polka
dot fabric but I used white daisy trim w/PINK
centers. I may add a little PINK BLING in the daisy
center ... what do you think?

I used a shade brighter PINK plaid ribbon
to create the bow & then attached the
flowerette.

Please join our beautiful PINK HOSTESS,
Miss Beverly & all the other wonderful
PINK LADIES.

Thank you Miss Beverly.

This little lamp I used a darling animal
character fabric that is very bright & colorful. The top trim is both PINK & GREEN flowers overlaying the GREEN & white ribbon trim. I add the GREEN pom-pom braided trim along the bottom & added a soft pink ruffle on the seam. The lamp has a little yellow moon pull.
